The Lake Dance
THE LAKE DANCE - MIXED MEDIA DRAWINGS ON PAPER PRODUCED DURING REHEARSALS WITH SPIRALARTS DANCE THEATRE COMPANY
At the end of one of the rehearsal sessions, I laid out the drawings on the floor, and one of the young dancers came over to look at them. He asked me:
“Tracy, are you drawing the dancers, the movement, the music, or the space in between?“
I smiled and replied, “All of it.“
It was so beautifully put.
In the moments of drawing, while connected to and feeling the energy of the space, there is often a feeling of becoming very alive and present. To a dancer, a particular shape they are making, the interaction between dancers, the quality of movement they are generating, or the direction they are travelling through space. I can become very aware of a sound or section of music I hear, or a feeling that arises in me and propels my body to move, to do something with the media, or with a specific colour in a particular way, on the paper in that moment. The drawing is a result of that sensing presence. The body connected to drawing media and to witnessing and absorbing. I have no idea what will come out.
