ART TUTOR ONLINE

Learn Drawing and Painting skills at home

Through bespoke visual assignments

With access to 1-to-1 support

“A few days ago I found myself walking through the meadow area of the Common, near to my studio. It was beautiful. I was struck by all the wildflowers poking through. . . . . . . What an abundance of fabulous subject matter.”
— TB May 2020

This unique resource of assignments grew out of a class which migrated online in 2020. It resulted, not only in a highly successful method of distance learning, but also the creation of 20 stand alone assignments rich in content, tips and masterclass tuition, to develop and enhance creative skills.

These assignments are now being offered as stand alone resources for individuals wishing to develop their drawing and painting skills. They can either be purchased as they are and used in their entirety, or coupled with 1-to-1 tuition as and when needed, to support learning.

HOW ART TUTOR ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS WORK

  • This is a drop in assignment based course, which means you can purchase the assignments individually or in any order, as and when you want to, and you don’t have to commit to a whole course, if you don’t want to.

  • It’s flexible learning - Assignments are completed by you in the comfort of your own home, in your own time, at your own pace, taking as much time as you want, to explore and develop your skills.

  • The assignments will give you a focus and direction in order to develop sound artistic understanding and technique, with a wealth of opportunities to stretch yourself further.

  • There are 20 assignments to choose from, each focussing on a specific themed subject matter, creative approach, media technique or learning objective.

  • You will be able to put together your own art kit as you will need to use your own materials, either drawing media or paint (or both). Suggestions are made within the content to help you to decide what materials to use. This will enable you to identify your own preferences as well as encouraging you to explore alternatives.

  • Each assignment can easily be coupled with access to 1-to-1 support and feedback, to tailor your experience. (This is via Zoom)

WHO IS THIS FOR

  • Adults who would like to develop their creative skills, with expert guidance and tuition. Who may not be able to access a regular in person class, or prefer to work privately under their own steam, at a pace and schedule that works for them.

  • People who want to have access to tuition and feedback on their progress, from a professional artist and art tutor with a wealth of teaching experience, and prefer a 1-to-1 approach.

  • It is also perfect for those who want some inspiration or a starting point, as a refresher to rejuvenate existing skills or just simply to try something new.

  • As well as for people who want to de-stress. Being creative is a great way to unwind and relax. Drawing and painting is practicing mindfulness, so why not enrich life and learn a new skill at the same time.

  • Suitable for all levels of experience and ability. From age 18 upwards.

WHAT SKILLS WILL YOU DEVELOP

  • A grounding in fundamental artistic skills, with an approach based on working from observation (Observational drawing skills) and learning how to see.

  • An understanding of visual language - shape, form, line, light, tone, scale, proportion, volume, pattern, texture, perspective, colour..

  • Mark-making - exploring and using media, techniques and approaches, skillfully and experimentally. Assignments introduce a variety of media from pencil and charcoal, through to pen, ink, paint, pastel, collage and mixed media approaches, including Frottage and Stencil.

  • Freedom and flexibility to experiment and play as means to open up your own unique creative potential.

  • Creative expression and individuality through mark-making and approach - How you use media and your approach to mark-making can communicate mood and emotion, and bring energy and life into your creative work. Some assignments focus specifically on Gesture, or working quickly and freely to help to loosen things up.

  • Different ways of seeing - How to approach a subject, setting up, considering viewpoints, shape, shadows and reflections, drafting out and structuring a drawing/painting, perspective and negative space, light & tone, depth of field and space, composition…

  • Mindfulness - through observation and focus.

  • Confident and sound drawing/painting skills, developed and encouraged through practice, experimentation, reflection and self evaluation.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU SPEND ON EACH ASSIGNMENT

Initial recommendation - 2 - 4 hours

The time it takes to complete is entirely up to you, dependent upon how much time you have to commit to developing your creativity. When I first set up this online resource as a class, I recommended one and a half to two and a half hours and this worked fine. But, it was also soon clear from those who participated, that the potential for study within each assignment could be much greater. There are many opportunities for exploration offered through the subject photographs and ideas in the brief. So, be guided by your own needs, available time and enthusiasm.

Dedicate some time for you creativity

What I would say, is that it is good if you can, to dedicate a time each week for your creativity. Whether that be 2 hours or 2 days, try to be consistent. Skills develop over time with practice, repetition and exploration. Make a commitment to yourself and from there, let your enjoyment determine timing and pace.

2) VIDEO TUTORIAL

APPROXIMATELY 30 minutes (sometimes longer)

An informative video tutorial recorded in the studio. This will take you through the key features of the assignment, with demonstration and pointers to get you started.

3) PHOTOGRAPHIC SUBJECT MATTER

Approximately 12 Separate images for each assignment (each assignment will vary)

These consist of a series of carefully shot photographs, specifically created as material to draw or paint from. The beauty of this, is that you get to choose from different angles and viewpoints, close-ups or long-shots, shadows and reflections, as you would when positioning yourself in front of the subject matter in a live class. The photographs have been created and selected to enable focused learning, as well as, to inspire and encourage you to look at these everyday objects in a new way.

A NOTE ON SUBJECT MATTER

My in-person classes often focus on working from direct observation, but here we are in a situation of working remotely. So, I’ve adapted my preferred method to incorporate the use of working from a photograph. The subjects have been set up/approached and photographed specifically to draw or paint from. I have endeavoured to provide a good working source material that can be viewed on a computer or other device and seen, as if it were a form in front of you, offering varying perspectives, viewpoints and close ups to select from. This also means that the lesson can be taken out beyond the still life table, to include landscape, architecture, wildlife in motion, and anything else which inspires, as well as various still life forms and arrangements. In addition to working directly from the photographs, I also recommend that the images be a source of inspiration and starting point, for you to find your own subject matter or set up a still life along the same lines, to draw and paint from in the real.
